The renowned Trofeo Conde de Godó Regatta celebrates in 2013 its 40th edition from 22–26 May being the opening event for the second 52 Super Series in the Mediterranean. Following Quantum Key West Race Week last January and the 2013 Gaastra 52 World Championship Miami in March, seven TP52 Teams from five different nations will be vying for success on Barcelona’s waters. They include three from the USA: 2011 MedCup Champion Quantum Racing sponsored by Gaastra Pro sailing gear is welcoming the return of former skipper Terry Hutchinson who will sail the Mediterranean season as tactician with skipper-helm Ed Baird. Making their first foray into European waters, Rio Racing by Manouch Moshayedi and Austin and Gwen Fragomen’s Interlodge. “We are especially happy that the American teams have made their effort to join us to compete in Europe and we are sure that they will enjoy the variety of competition and the venues this season.” Concludes Rob Weiland, class manager for the 52’s. “It is pleasing to be able to report that the fleet has actually grown on last season and we are experiencing a period of stability which should allow us to build for next season with some confidence.”
Current 52 Super Series champions Azzurra Sailing leading to date after season’s two US 52 Super Series events in the overall series standings by just six points ahead of Niklas Zennström’s Rán Racing, will compete at the 40th Trofeo Conde de Godó Regatta Barcelona as well. Gaastra 52 World Championship Miami 2013 winner Rán Racing, Tony Langley’s Gladiator and debuting in Barcelona, Turkey’s Provezza (ex Cristabella/Desafio) owned by Ergin Imre and steered by Britain’s double Olympic silver medallist Nick Rogers with Peter Lester (NZL) as tactician, will complete the line-up. Gaastra is the proud partner of the Transpac 52 class and the 52 Super Series 2013, which comprises four Mediterranean regattas: Following Barcelona in May, the Royal Cup Ibiza 2013 will be held from 2–6 July, thereafter the Copa del Rey 2013 Regatta from the 27th July to 3rd August and 52’s Super Series final event, the Audi Week of the Straits 2013 Porto Cervo from 10–14 September.
The 40th Trofeo Conde de Godó Regatta is organized by the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB) and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation (RFEV) as well as the collaboration of the Catalan Sailing Federation (FCV). The famous Barcelona sailing regatta is also open for the Wally class, the Soto 40 class, the J-80 class, ORC 0–1-2 and 3 scoring for the Spanish ORC Championship, the European Soto 40 Championship and the Wally Class 2013 Racing Calendar.
