Sneek Ahoy! Europe’s biggest Inshore Sail Event on the Dutch Sneekermeer sets sail to its 79th edition this year. The Sneekweek 2014 will take place from the 2nd to 7th of August extending a warm welcome to in total 40 competing sailing classes, almost 1000 participants and about 150.000 visitors at Gaastra’s hometown Sneek. This year again, Gaastra as a Dutch Sportswear Brand with a DNA structure based on a passion for sailing and the sea, is one of the proud sponsors of this big Dutch sailing event. The history of Gaastra began 1897 in the townlet Sneek with the innovative sailmaker Douwe Gaastra – he had the ambition to make sailing go faster as well as more competitive and efficient. From the Caribbean regatta Les Voiles de St. Barth, to the Mediterranean sailing event Copa del Rey at Palma de Mallorca to the inshore sail event Sneekweek on the Sneekermeer. Today, the Gaastra logo, forming the outline of the Frisian town’s landmark, Sneek’s waterport, is everywhere within sight where serious sailing is going on. Annually organized by the Royal Yacht Club Sneek (Koninklijke Watersportvereniging Sneek, KWS), the big Friesland sailing event in the north of the Netherlands, will already kick off on the 1st of August 2014 with the opening ceremony at 9 pm and a traditional ‘vlootschouw’ (boat parade) at 10 pm with forty boats, each representing its class, accompanied by classical boats and music. It will end around midnight with huge fireworks. From Saturday on, the ‘starteiland’ will turn into the event’s epicentre with best views to follow the daily competitions! And after racing? The party begins! The ‘start island’ rocks with music and concerts and in the heart of Sneek there will be a local fun fair, shows and you can treat yourself to some fine food.
