The countdown to the first big Mediterranean sailing regatta of the year has started: PalmaVela 2014 with Gaastra again as its main sponsor will set sail from April 30 to May 4 with racing starting on May 1 at 12.00 CET. For most of the teams, a line-up from twenty different countries, the Majorcan sailing regatta in the Bay of Palma is the kick-off event of the new sailing season providing the opportunity to put their (new) boats to the proof as well as to check how technical changes are working out. The 11th Edition of the Majorcan Event Gaastra PalmaVela 2014 organized by the renowned Real Club Náutico de Palma (RCNP) and the Real Federación Española de Vela (RFEV) stands out due to its wide variety of sailing classes. More than 20 beauties in classes Maxi, Mini Maxi – as British ‘Alegre‘, ‘Jethou‘ by Sir Peter Ogden and Niklas Zennström’s ‘Ran Racing‘ -, IRC and Wally – as the amazing Maltese 130 feet ‘Angel’s Share’ with 727 square metres of sail area, equal in area to almost three tennis courts(!), 2013 Wally racing series winner ‘Open Season‘ and Gaastra PalmaVela’s past edition’s winner ‘J One‘ by Frenchman Jean Charles Decaux – will grace the starting line in the Bay of Palma.
To the 20th birthday of Wally Yachts this year, there will be nine Wallys in total competing at Gaastra PalmaVela 2014 – a new record number! Battling it out on Majorcan waters as well, the Soto 40 sailing class, ORC (the biggest competing class with 47 participants), J80 one design, Flying Fifteen, Classic, Dragon and Vintage boats, traditional Vela Latinas (Lateen Sail) and disabled sailing.
