Warm water, Hot Racing! That’s the slogan of the BVI Spring Regatta and Sailing Festival 2014 set to take place from March 31 – April 6. The 43rd edition of the popular Caribbean sailing regatta in the beautiful setting of British Virgin Islands offers something for everyone with impressive and individual race courses. Starting at Nanny Cay, the Sailing festival will kick off April 1 with the circumnavigation of Tortola, BVIslands largest one. For the 37-mile run, the fleet will head around the North side in the Atlantic Ocean, rounding Beef Island into Sir Francis Drake Channel back to Nanny Cay Marina, the regatta and festival central. Last year, Peter Corr’s Aiyana set the new monohull record of 3 hours, 29 minutes and 44 seconds for the Nanny Cay Cup. Will there be a new record run in?
Two notable entries among the 100 + competing boats – ranging from spinnakers, bareboats, cruisers and, back by popular request, the one-design class – are Irvine Laidlaw’s 52′ IRC optimized Highland Fling XII and Piet Vroon’s Ker 46 Tonnerre de Breskens. Following the sailing festival, the three-day BVI Spring Regatta 2014 starts April 4 combining racing action on three bodies of water – the Atlantic Ocean, Sir Francis Drake Channel and the Caribbean Sea – with all day fun for family and friends and legendary parties after sundown at Nanny Cay with live music and dancing on the beach.
